A trading plan is a written operating manual for your decisions. It does not predict the market and it cannot eliminate losses. Its value is consistency: the same setup receives the same treatment whether you feel confident, impatient, afraid, or eager to recover.
Define your market and schedule
Write the currency pair, session, days, and timeframes you are permitted to trade. Include conditions that mean you stay out, such as poor sleep, major scheduled news, unusually wide spreads, or divided attention.
Describe one complete setup
Name the market condition, context, entry trigger, invalidation, target method, and any filters. Use observable language. “Strong trend” is vague; “price above a rising moving average with higher highs and higher lows” is more testable.
Set risk and session boundaries
Define maximum risk per trade, maximum total open risk, daily loss limit, and trade count. Specify how position size is calculated. Add a rule that prevents increasing size after a loss.
Copy this compact template
Market: I trade ______ during ______.
Setup: I enter only when ______.
Invalidation: The trade is wrong when ______.
Exit: I take profit or manage the position by ______.
Risk: I risk no more than ______ per trade and stop for the day at ______.
No-trade rules: I do not trade when ______.
Review: After each session I save ______ and record ______.
Review the process, not just profit
At the end of each week, count rule-following trades, impulsive trades, sizing errors, and missed valid setups. Separate strategy outcomes from execution mistakes. Revise rules only after a documented sample—not after one uncomfortable day.
Use the discipline guide to turn the plan into a repeatable routine.
